The Beardmore Hotel & Conference Centre was delighted to win at the Scottish Hotel Awards 2012:
The Beardmore inspires up-and-coming band
The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre in Clydebank may not be the first venue that comes to mind when thinking of top bands – but it was the inspirational meeting place for rising act, Shimmer.
When Paul Duffy and Michael Thliveros started working together at the Clydebank hotel the last thing on their minds was making music, but they quickly realised they shared a common bond.
Michael picked up his guitar, joined Paul’s band in rehearsals and they have since gone from strength to strength.
Michael, Conference Supervisor at the hotel, said: “The Beardmore played a key part in bringing the band together. Although the band was already up and running in some form, the Beardmore helped complete the band.
“I joined as rhythm guitarist and then another colleague introduced us to Kevin Scullion, who is now on keyboard and vocals.”
Paul, Food and Beverage Supervisor, added: “It can be tough combining hotel work and the band. The hours we work in the hotel are demanding and we also rehearse every Sunday and often do mid-week gigs.
“It could be a problem making sure we get that time off but our bosses have been fantastic. Without the Beardmore the current band would never have formed, so we have a lot to thank the hotel for.”
Shimmer have performed at venues across Glasgow, including King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, The Arches and Carling Academy. They have also travelled to Germany to appear in a music festival and recently performed at Winterfest at George Square.
Forthcoming gigs include:
• Sunday 22 February – King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut (supporting Vagabond);
• Wednesday 25 March – Pivo Pivo, Glasgow;
• Friday 3 April – Whistlebinkies, Edinburgh;
• Saturday 18 April – Maggie Mays, Glasgow; and
• Friday 26 June – Crown bar, Dunoon (supporting Greg Griffin)
Eileen Newman, General Manager of the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre, is delighted the venue has played a part in forming the band.
She said: “We are pleased that we have helped bring such a great band together and wish them every success with their upcoming performances.
“Hopefully when Shimmer reach the top of the charts they will remember that it all began at the Beardmore.”
